Things Fall Apart
by Chinua Achebe (Noble Prize Winner in Literature)

Things Fall Apart takes its title and theme from a poem entitled The Second Coming written by an Irish poet, W. B. Yeats. The relevant lines are:

Things fall apart: the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.

Achebe looks back at his Igbo society, specifically at the period the white man broke into it as missionary, trader, and administrator, and that throws into relief the relevance of the two lines above. This awareness of things falling apart is located by Obierike in his accusation of the white man:

"Now he has won our brothers and our clan can no longer act
like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together
and we have fallen apart."

Things Fall Apart, then, is about a clan which once thought like one, spoke like one, shared a common awareness and acted like one. The white man came and his coming broke this unity. In the process many heads rolled; new words, new usages and new applications gained entrance into the men's heads and hearts and the old society gradually gave way. The process continues even today.

"The story is the tragedy of Okonkwo, an important man in the Igbo tribe (Nigeria) in the days when white men were first appearing on the scene... Mr. Achebe's very simple but excellent novel tells of the series of events by which Okonkwo through his pride and his fears becomes exiled from his tribe and returns only to be forced into the ignominy of suicide to escape the results of the rash courage against the white man... He handles the macabre with telling restraint and the pathotic without any false embarrassment."
